Click me if you want to look cute this Winter

December 21, 2018

This is NOT clickbait.

I have spent Winters in Toronto, Montreal, and Boston- some of the worst cities in North America to live through during the Winter Season. This Winter I choose to stay warm and stay comfortable while looking good and staying happy.

Winters get me sad becuase of the darkness (along with the frigid, cold temperatures and disgusting slush) but with the latest trends and my willful choice to dress smart during the below-freezing-temperatures, that is about to change.

Below I've listed the coolest brands and shops to find stylish and Winter-proof gear. Let's get started.

Jackets:
1. The Puffer. Like that Kendall Jenner meme. Puffers are trendy and if you buy the right type- they can be super warm. It may not be the most cost effective, or give you the most longevity BUT I think colourful Puffers make Winter less dreary. StyleNanda also has some really cool Puffers and Parka's but I don't think they are Canadian-Winter approved. They're just a good option if you want a more funky, colourful Winter Jacket to wear on the warmer Winter days.

2. The Parka: If you live in a drier Winter climate, you have the freedom to choose between a Down or Synthetic Fill. If you're into Winter sports and live in more wet-Winter climates, your best bet would be to opt for a synthetic fill as it's much easier to maintain when wet.

3. Seeing Double: You've got 2 Jackets that are kinda warm. Kinda Warm + Kinda Warm = Super Warm. I really love layering jackets and especially layering long, trench-coats! I think with the right layering this coat-technique can keep you warm until about -5 degrees celsius.

4. Fleece/ Shearling: There is no shortage of fleece and shearling jackets this season. I have 3 in my own closet!! Although the Acne Studios one is the dream (pictured below) I've seen some really awesome ones at thrift stores. If you're open to splurging check out Arrivals NYC- these jackets have also become the dreaaaaaammm.

Boots:
Get some durable, weather proof boots as an investment piece and make sure it's a simple looking boot. Something that'll match your jackets and Winter wardrobe, and change it up with the laces. I've become obsessed with changing the laces on my boots so the boot ALWAYS matches my outerwear- but I don't get bored. I've got red, yellow, and white laces depending on the jacket I'll wear that day. Winter/ hiking boots are also very trendy this season, it seems like it's the rebirth of the Combat boot trend. Winter boots are cool but I refuse to ever wear the Moon Boot.

Innerwear & Mid-layers:

  • Merino Wool- it's a temperature regulating fabric. I use to work with a lot of technical gear and learned that Merino is the best layering fabric.
  • Uniqlo Heatteach- I live by this stuff! It's a really thin layer but it's perfect to keep you warm on those bone-chilling, cold days.
  • Wool tights- I don't like to ditch my skirts in the winter, instead I just add an under-layer of wool tights and a pair of thigh high boots.
  • Costco Kirkland socks. 'Nuff said.

Accessories:
And obviously, wear your hats, scarves, and gloves- make it colourful!!
